With the first discoveries in the southern North Sea having been made less than 10 years previously, understanding of the geology and systems at work was very limited. “Through JAPEC (Joint Association for Petroleum Exploration Courses) I helped run a number of industry courses in the 80’s and 90’, outlining the concepts and most recent. An understanding of the Mesosoic fault systems in the UK Southern North Sea is important in modelling the burial history of source and reservoir rocks, in determining the time of formation of structural traps in the Permian and older section and in mapping seismic velocity fields in Mesozoic rocks for accurate time to depth conversion. The evolution of Mesozoic fault systems in the Southern. The North Sea basin is located in NE Europe and lies between the United Kingdom, and Norway just north of The Netherlands and can be divided into many sub-basins. The Southern North Sea basin is the largest gas producing basin in the UK continental shelf, with production coming from the lower Permian sandstones which are sealed by the upper Zechstein salt. The North Sea has long been important as one of Europe’s most productive fisheries. It also serves as a prominent shipping zone among European countries and between Europe and the Middle East.A third aspect of economic importance has been the extensive reserves of petroleum and natural gas discovered beneath the seafloor.. The North Sea has had a strong influence on European history.

This edition obviously it's quite old but some information have been updated in next editions. I strongly recommend "Source Rock" chapter - it's a very good introduction to source rock geochemistry - obviously which understanding is essential for any petroleum s: 2.

"At the dawn of the new millennium, the North Sea has become a mature petroleum province, with a weath of geological and geophysical data collected during the last 40 years.

At its acme inthe area produced 9% of the world's oil, and was its fourth alrgest producing region (see Chapter 20).5/5(1). The discovery in of the supergrant Groningen gas field (97 TCF) and the Continental Shelf Convention of presaged the first phase of North Sea Exploration in what later has become known as the Southern Gas basin.

Offshore drilling began in UK waters in late and a year later about 20 TCF of gas had been found in five major discoveries. The Black Sea comprises two extensional basins formed in a back-arc setting above the northward subducting Tethys Ocean, close to the southern margin of Eurasia. The two basins coalesced late in their post-rift phases in the Pliocene, forming the present single depocentre.
